The rise of the product builder

AI isn’t simply changing how we work as designers, it’s changing what we’re capable of becoming.

For decades, our craft has been measured by our ability to define. We define the vision, the experience, the customer problem, and the shape of what should be built.

Today, tools like Claude Code are collapsing the distance between intention and implementation.

A few weeks ago, with the help of Claude Code, I opened and merged my first pull request into a production codebase, marking a first for Visa’s Global Design organization and opening a new path for how design can participate directly in product delivery.

The pull request was simply the evidence. What mattered was the signal: we’re entering an era where designers can move from insight to implementation with a level of speed and proximity that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago.

That shift is giving rise to a new kind of designer. One whose impact extends beyond vision, strategy, and specifications into the delivery of the product itself.

This is the rise of the product builder.

For years, our industry optimized for handoffs. The next chapter will optimize for outcomes.

Design no longer just defines. We deliver.

And we’re just getting started.
